We have four wonderful committees in place to plan specific projects. The combined efforts of our committees are put forth with the goal of helping residents and business property owners to achieve increased property value and increased sales tax revenues, and to show our pride in beautiful Old Fort, North Carolina! Our focus is on our town’s rich mountain heritage, railroad history, natural surroundings and architecturally significant structures. We hope you’ll consider joining a committee…there’s something for everyone!
DESIGN AND BEAUTIFICATION
The Design and Beautification Committee’s mission is to create a safe and friendly pedestrian-oriented atmosphere for residents and visitors to Old Fort, while at the same time keeping intact our town’s positive spirit and unique sense of place. Current and past projects include the Bradley Park Beautification Project, olive jar plantings on Main Street and Catawba Avenue, welcome signs for our town and the Mill Creek Greenway. Contact Susie Painter or Terry Wilson to join this committee.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The economic success of Old Fort depends upon a vibrant mix of quality shops, professional services, restaurants and entertainment establishments that provide a variety of opportunities for a singular cultural experience, and the Economic Development Committee’s goal is to identify economic development potential in Old Fort and to strengthen the sense of community and quality of life through the cooperative marketing and promotion efforts of our businesses. Our committee’s projects include merchant and retail consumer surveys, analyzing retail properties for potential growth and expansion, locating and applying for economic development grants and finding ways to reuse and restore existing structures such as the Rockett Building on Main Street. Contact Dean Kanipe to join this committee.
HERITAGE AND CULTURAL PRESERVATION
We take a lot of pride in our mountain heritage and culture, and the Heritage and Cultural Preservation Committee works to keep that heritage alive and thriving through projects such as the designation of downtown Old Fort as a National Historic District. Contact Terrell Finley to join this committee.
PROMOTIONS
The Promotions Committee is focused on publicizing all the wonderful things that go on in our town, as well as promoting the Old Fort Mountain Heritage Alliance. From highlighting special community events like the Gold Festival, Railroad Day, Pioneer Day and the Artists & Artisan League’s Arts Mart, to staffing booths at local and regional events to showcase our Alliance’s achievements, our committee aims to get the word out about Old Fort, North Carolina. We also work on fundraising efforts to raise money for projects that will enhance and enrich our community. Contact Debbie Smith or Carol Price to join this committee.
